01.01.2016

Rules of the Festival

The participants get registered by their photos. The head of each club should fill in a form for each participant from his club on ОД «Южная Русь» web-site. In these forms the real first and last names of the participants should be written for their identification at the festival. Photos of participants in historical clothing and armour (for men) and in historical clothing (for ladies) should be attached to the form.

Requirements for Photos

Two photos should be taken – the first one with a participant in historical clothing and the second one with him in full ammunition. (Only one photo in historical clothing for ladies.)

Take bull body photos, standing up straight and looking straight forward, hands down. No pathetic postures. Hold your weapon in your right hand (or in your left hand if you are left-handed), so that its structure could be clearly seen. Hold your shield in your left hand (or in your right hand if you are left-handed) in half a turn. The background of the photo should be pale. Your photo should be high-contrasted, without blur but also without deep shadows. Please, no Photoshop.

Also several more photos are needed which should show:

1)      Details of trimmings – tapes, embroidery. A ruler in the photo is needed;

2)      Small articles of clothing – belts, bags, knives, shoes, beads, bracelets, rings, fibulas etc.;

3)      Details of munition – pommel and cross-guard of a sword (a part of the blade should also be shown); axe, spear, seax, sabre. A ruler in the photo is recommended.

The Festival Committee examines the photos and then adds the applicant into the list of the accepted persons on the website.

All changes during the registration will be shown in respective sections of the website. The Festival Committee has the right to decide if this or that item complies with the festival requirements. If some item is found to be questionable, the applicant should provide a historical source for this item.

The additional recommendations on forbidden items are provided on our website in the section “Articles”:
http://south-rus.org/articles/?ELEMENT_ID=934
. If you haven’t fill the application form or it is not examined due to the end of application terms, you won't be allowed to take part in the festival.

Those who hasn’t got registered on our website won't be admitted to the festival and won't be able to take part in it.

Filling in the form and passing the registration automatically means that the applicant knows and accepts all the Rules of the Festival. The applications are accepted from January 01, 2016 to April 20,2016 (11:59 PM).

Disputable Moments

If a registered applicant cannot take part in the festival for some reasons, his club may decide to take another person at the last moment. In this case the new participant may get registered at the festival, but only with clothing and munitions of that person who passed the registration. Note that the Festival Committee reserves the right not to accept the new participant if the Committee wasn't informed about this change (by phone, e-mail, sms, etc.) or the clothing and/or munitions of the new participant were not approved by the Committee.

Only accepted applicants may stay in the festival camp. Visitors may stay in the special parking area.

Decide beforehead where your drivers will stay to avoid disputable moments and conflicts. If a driver is considered to be a member of a club, he should get registered with his clothing and munitions on the usual terms and adhere to the festival requirements (smoking only in special areas etc.). If your driver is not a member of your club, inform him that he may stay in the parked car or in a tent (not historical one) in the parking area.

Registration

- At the guard station 24-hour registration will be held and tokens of participants will be given. People without tokens won’t be allowed into the camp.

- Each participant must have his/her passport with him/her to verify the personal data with the list of persons registered on the website.

- Before your historical tents are put up the person responsible for your group should inform the Camp Supervisor of your arrival. The Supervisor will give this person garbage bags and tell him where toilets, water supply point and smoking area are situated.

- Tents should be put up according to the scheme developed by the Festival Committee.

Cooking, Food, and Drink.

- All participants should buy and cook food themselves, water is provided by the Festival Committee.

- You can use plates and mugs made of historical materials only (wood, ceramic, glass and horn).

- Please remember that every respectable Viking or Slav has his own knife and wooden spoon.

- Use only historical pots, cauldrons and frying pans. Plastic things, cans, packages etc. mustn't be seen. Keep them in your tents.

- Firewood is provided by the Festival Committee.

- Cook food only on fire pits intended for this purpose.

General Recommendations on Costumes

Clothing

- Every participant should wear only historical dress (stylizations or copies of medieval clothes 9-11th centuries AC) approved by the Committee.

- No watches, modern jewelry and sunglasses.

- Wear only historical shoes.

- Smoking is allowed only in special smoking areas and is prohibited in the territory of the camp. The Supervisor will check this.

- Don't use mobile phones. If you want to make a phone call, do it in your tent or in smoking areas.

Munitions

- Every male participant of the festival must have at least one offensive weapon of the IX-XI centuries AC.

- Every participant who wants to take part in mass fights or assault on the fortress must have at least one offensive weapon and at least a minimum of armour: a helmet and a shield. For a spearman and a broadaxe man a helmet is enough.

- All the munitions must comply with the period of the festival (IX-XI centuries AC) and with the Festival Committee's requirements which are mentioned in a special article. (Vendel helmets are accepted.) And of course, munitions must be accepted by the examiners.

- If a piece of munition doesn’t comply with this period, it won’t be accepted for the festival.

- If weapon is brought to the festival without registration, it will be withdrawn by the Festival Committee and given back to its owner only at the end of the festival.

- Chainmails made of bent rings (not riveted) are not allowed since 2012.

The Borrowing Principle

Borrowings are allowed only from the neighbouring regions. Borrowings “over a region” are not allowed. For instance, we have the following regions: Europe, Scandinavia, Rus, the Steppe, and the East. So, collecting a Scandinavian complex you may borrow from Rus and Europe and may not borrow from the Steppe or the East. For Rus the neighbouring regions are Scandinavia and the Steppe. The Steppe neighbours with Rus and the East. This model is though general and simplified, therefore applicants should provide sources for any borrowings which are beyond this model.

Transport

Cars of the participants may be parked only at a garded car parking (500m away from the historical camp).

Environmental Rules

-          Litter should be dispoed only in designated areas, otherwise you may be banned from the festival;

-          Only special toilets should be used;

-          At the end of the festival all signs of your staying there should be removed. The Supervisor will check this;

-          Fire making without permission of the Supervisor is prohibited;

-          For breaking the environmental rules you may be banned from the festival and prohibited to take part in our future festivals.

General Rules of Behavior

-          Modern musical instruments and songs that do not fit the spirit of the event are prohibited;

-          Talks about computer games, spaceships and other things untypical for the Early Medieval Period are unwelcome;

-          Using obscene words in large amounts is forbidden;

-          Any aggressive actions of participants towards each other and the audience are forbidden. All conflicts should be solved peacefully and with the help of festival administrators, if necessary;

-          DRINKING ALCOHOL on “Tourist Day” before show fights IS FORBIDDEN. Otherwise you will be banned from the festival.

Festival managers check armour and weapons for historical correctness. All weapons and armour that do not fit the declared period won’t be accepted. The person who nevertheless uses such munitions thus breaking the rules of the festival will be disqualified.

1. Assault on a Fortress

All participants are divided into 2 groups by the draw. Each group tries to hold a fortress. The time for repair will be announced after the first assault.

The fortress with a ditch of 2m width and 1.5m depth will be built for the festival on the preparation stage.

Participants may complete the fortress as they want to, or leave everything as it is. Using chainsaws for building is forbidden. You may use only axes, handsaws and entrenching tools (authentic ones are preferred). Structures that may cause any risk of injury (vertical sharp stakes, pitfalls etc.) are forbidden. The preferred material for building is dead wood.

During the assault the attacking side is allowed to destroy fortifications at their wish. Entrenching tools and any other items (such as battering rams, ladders, various protective means) made by the attacking side may be used for damaging the fortifications. Hooks and grapnels can be used for picking out logs, but they should not be thrown, only manually fixed.

2. Mass Fights

The requirements for weapons and armour are general. Projectile weapon is forbidden in mass fights for safety reasons. It also must not be used in the presence of tourists during the exhibition performance.

The aim of each fighting team is to “kill” the maximum possible amount of opponents by fair means.

There are several categories of mass fights: Line Fight, Woodland Fight, Assault on a Hill (the aim is to seize the height), Fight for a Banner (the aim is to seize the banner of the opponent side).

Notes:

welcomed:

·         proper armour (lamellars, chainmails, aventails on helmets, gauntlets);

·         well fitting hidden protection.

NOT welcomed:

·         swords of less than 1kg or more than 2kg weight;

·         dirty and uncleaned weapons and armour.

Restrictions and Prohibitions for the Applicants

For Men

I. Clothing

It is not allowed to wear:

1. Modern clothing (socks, sweaters, thermal underwear etc. under historical clothing) and modern shoes.

2. Glasses (must be changed for contact lenses), watches, modern jewelry, sunglasses.

3. Needle-knit socks of bright colours or with patterns which give away the needling technique.

4. Pants and wide trousers sewn of fabric stripes. Pleated wide trousers are allowed.

5. Triangle caps (trimmed with fur or tape) with a tip folded on one side are banned since 2010. Caps of other kinds, with a tip folded back or not folded are allowed. But it is not recommended to pin fubulas, small bells etc. on them.

See more details on acceptable headdress for Scandinavians and Slavs here:  http://south-rus.org/articles/?ELEMENT_ID=6953

6. It is prohibited to use tablet-woven tapes as leg windings. Berdo-woven tapes with patterns or less than 7cm in width should’t be used this way either.

7. Men should not wear female needle-knit caps.

8. Since 2014 it is necessary for each participant to have any piece of woolen upper clothing with sleeves (shirt, caftan, etc.)

9. Leg windings made of fabric stripes are banned since 2015.

10. Carbatinae typical for the earlier period (I-VI centuries AC) are banned since 2015.

For Alans:

11. Since 2016 it is prohibited to wear upper garments with wool material above. Now wool in upper garments is allowed only as a warm interlayer covered with linen or silk.

Sewing and Trimming:

12. The neck of any garment should be fastened with a fibula, a button or with strings. If you have no fibula or button, either use strings or don’t wear clothing with a cut on the neck.

13. Woven tapes broader than 2cm are not allowed if you cannot provide any reliable source for it. Tapes narrower than 2cm are allowed for trimmings. Confirmed techniques, patterns and materials in making woven tapes are welcomed.

14. Embroidery should not be wider than 3cm. If there is archaeological evidence, it may be scaled maximum 50% relative to the original find, and the applicant must mention the size of the original piece of embroidery in his application. This requirement is aimed to restrict fantasy motifs in embroidery for the benefit of archaeologically confirmed and correct patterns of adequate size.

15. Lurex embroidery is prohibited.

16. Leather items (bags, shirts, caps, sheaths etc.) are not allowed to be sewn with leather cord. Use only linen or woolen thread.

17. Detaied description of all permitted types of bags see in the article on our website: http://south-rus.org/articles/?ELEMENT_ID=907

18. Sandal stitches and stitches of other types without archaeological records for the Early Middle Ages are not allowed in making leather shoes.

19. The difference in dates between items of your costume should be 100 years maximum. A costume is dated by its “latest” item. If your jewelry set is of the 1st  half of the X century AC and your shoes of the 2nd half of the X century AC, then your costume in total will be of the 2nd half of the X century.

If a costume clearly belongs to a certain period the examiner may order to exclude items which are 100 years older and/or younger. The same is true for items borrowed from neighbouring regions with considerable range of dates.

If your costume is rich and complicated, it is allowed to borrow items that are important for your costume but don’t have any source in the home region. For example, if there are no sources for shoes in a certain region it is permissible to borrow them from a neighbouring region.

This permission does not apply to simple and not wealthy costumes (beginners, craftsmen, drivers etc.).

II. Weapon and Armour:

1. Helmets differing a lot from the original ones by shape, appearance, and/or design are not allowed.

1a. 4-segment helmets of Chyornaya Mogila type.

If the main body of a helmet is of generalized type, the back and front plates should nevertheless have wavy edges, and the top part also should be of a real and correct type. Simplified forms (without a top part or without wavy cuts) are allowed in case of being copies of certain archaeological finds.

2. Swords differing from archaeological finds (with narrow blades, slender grooves, unidentifiable pommels and cross-guards), or of later types are not allowed.

Since 2016 the additional requirements for blade weapon is introduced:

a)      Pommels and cross-guards of swords should be as close to the original ones as possible. Swords of types which implicate pommels or cross-guards with ornaments should have ones. Dimensions of swords should be within the range of average sizes for their types.

b)      Swords should correspond to the samples of the Viking Age in blade width, groove width, groove shape, etc. It is thereby necessary to provide a separate picture of your sword with clearly seen details (handle and blade) while applying for the festival.

c)      All the applicants which mention blade weapons (swords, sabres, etc.) in their application should by all means have proper scabbards made according to the patterns of the Viking Age. Two stripes of thick leather sewn together, a leather ring on a sword belt, etc. DO NOT stand for scabbards.

3. Axes machined from modern ones and/or without historical analogues are not allowed.

4. Gauntlets sewn of non-authentic materials, clumsily or with incorrect proportions (“boxing gloves”) are not allowed. The same is true for gauntlets designed according to schemes of later period.

5. Padded armour is not allowed. It may be worn as an independent element of armour only if there is archaeological evidence for it. Otherwise gambesons be worn only UNDER chainmails hidden to 90% or more.

6. Hafts of broad axes higher than the owner’s chin are not allowed. Thus, it is necessary to attach an appropriate picture to your application.

7. Mixing of munitions typical for Scandinavian, European and Steppe in one and the same complex is phohibited if not confirmed by any sources. For example it is not allowed to wear a Gjermundbu helmet with a sabre, a kite shield with a sabre, a kite shield with a lamellar armour, a Gjermundbu helmet with a kite shield, etc.

8. Spear shafts thicker than 3cm and higher than 2.5m are prohibited.

9. For open helmets it is not allowed to wear aventail attached to a bar as a protective element for the lower part of face.

10. Lamellar thigh covers are allowed only for HORSEMEN.

11. Shields made of metal or plywood are not allowed. Shields with metal binding are not allowed either, with the only exception of metal brackets put over a leather binding.

12. Padded aventails are prohibited if not covered with chainmail. It is not allowed to use lamellar aventails made of any materials as well.

13. Bows with tighting force more than 18kg are not allowed in manoeuvres.

14. Chainmails made of bent rings (not riveted) are not allowed since 2012.

15. Cheek covers on Gjermundbu helmets are prohibited since 2013.

16. 4-segment helmets for the Scandinavians are prohibited since 2014.

17. For Saltovo-Mayaki complexes since 2015 it is allowed to shift the dating to 30 years back (to 770s), as Kazazovo, Moldavanovka and Stolbishche are complexes of the VIII century.

For Women

4. Bathing shirts without sleeves with hem above knees. Bathing in modern swimsuits without historical shirts above is not allowed.

5. Tablet-woven straps  more than 3cm wide.

6. Since 2014 it is necessary for each participant to have any piece of woolen upper clothing with sleeves (shirt, caftan, etc.)

7. Carbatinae typical for the earlier period (I-VI centuries AC) are banned since 2015.

For Scandinavian Women:

8. Since 2016 hangerocks by F.Bau (front-open with the cut covered by an apron or fastened by a brooch) are not allowed. In versions by A.Geyer the parts must be wide enough to cover the body completely from all sides.

9. For women from Birka and Hedeby it is not allowed to fasten hangerocks with horseshoe, three-leaf, or round fibulas as well as wit non-pair fibulas other types which are traditionally used for other purposes. We understand that this can decrease the cost of a complex significantly but in the same time this leads to two mistakes: 1) too wide cloth straps which are not proved to be in use in the region; 2) it is impossible to hand anything on fibulas of the spoken types. Exceptions are possible for unique complexes from specific burials, if the origin of your complex can be easily recognized.

10. Correct hangerock straps are double loops made of linen rolls 1cm wide. Wide woolen straps as well as straps made of tablet-woven tapes are not allowed.

11. Ladies are not allowed to wear leather belts with buckles and tails in Scandinavian costume until these are proved to be widely used by women of this ethnic group at the given time in the given region. Please wear woven straps and cords.

For Alanian Women:

12. Since 2015 full coverage of pockets on Alanian dresses with monochrome silk is prohibited. It is still acceptable to use monochrome silk for orbicules and tablions (colour drops) in clothes.

13. Since 2015 dresses of Alanian women must be minimum 90cm (180cm in circle) wide.

Sewing and Trimming

14. Cuts of dress necks must be neatly fastened with fibulas, buttons or strings. If you have no fibula or button, either use strings or don’t wear clothing with a cut on the neck.

15.Woven tapes broader than 2cm are not allowed if you cannot provide any reliable source for it. Tapes narrower than 2cm are allowed for trimmings. Confirmed techniques, patterns and materials in making woven tapes are welcomed.

17. Lurex embroidery is not allowed.

16. Leather items (bags, shirts, caps, sheaths etc.) are not allowed to be sewn with leather cord. Use only linen or woolen thread.

17. Detaied description of all permitted types of bags see in the article in our website: http://south-rus.org/articles/?ELEMENT_ID=907

18. Sandal stitches and stitches of other types without archaeological records for the Early Middle Ages are not allowed in making leather shoes.

19. The difference in dates between items of your costume should be 100 years maximum. A costume is dated by its «latest» item. If your jewelry set is of the 1st  half of the X century AC and your shoes of the 2nd half of the X century AC, then your costume in total will be of the 2nd half of the X century.

If a costume is clearly oriented to a certain period the examiner may order to exclude items which are 100 years older and/or younger. The same is true for items borrowed from neighbouring regions with considerable range of dates.

23. Since 2014 usage of uncut animal fur (with paws, tails, etc.) as components of clothing is prohibited. Furriery was known long before the Viking Age, so use only cut pieces of fur for trimming and warming your clothes.

Jewelry and cosmetics

24.  Crude amber and other “granny’s beads” as well as beads from modern shops are not allowed.

25.  Abundance of beads without any other adornments and status items (i.e. when jewelry is rich and the costume itself is clearly not) is not allowed.

26. Body piercing without historical evidence for appearance and/or place is not allowed. We offer removing it and replacing with invisible plastic plugs.

27. Bright cosmetics (fingernails with modern designs, eyeshadows, etc.) is prohibited.

28.  Fashion hairdos (dreads, afro-tails, short haircuts for ladies etc) are not allowed. All this must be hidden under headwear.

Other Restrictions

The following is not allowed:

1.    Coming to the festival without being registered.

2.    Non-historical tableware (both personal and common, including cauldrons).

3.    Potatoes, tomatoes, ketchup, mayonnaise, sunflower seeds.

4.    Tents of  unnatural colours: sky-blue, pink, red, blue, black.

5.    Modern socks, sweaters, rubber overshoes, plastic for covering tents.

If some item in your complex is prohibited by our rules, but you can provide evidence for it, the question of it s approval for the festival may be discussed individually.

  1. детали отделки с линейкой (тесьма,вышивка);
  2. мелкие предметы одежды: пояса, ножи,сумки, обувь, бусы, браслеты, кольца, фибулы и т.д.;

  • круглосуточная регистрация будет организована на посту охраны, там же будут выдаваться жетоны участника. Люди без жетонов в лагере будут изыматься;
  • при себе иметь паспорта всех членов делегации клуба и распечатанную форму заявки;
  • перед установкой историчных палаток человек ответственный за группу должен сообщить о прибытии Коменданту лагеря, получить у него мешки для мусора, узнать расположение туалетов, водозабора и места для курения;
  • палатки ставятся в соответствии с заданной организаторами планировкой;
  • участники сами заботятся о еде и приготовлении пищи, вода доставляется оргкомитетом;
  • использование тарелок и кружек только из историчных материалов (дерево, глина, стекло и рог);
  • и пожалуйста помните, что каждый уважающий себя Славянин и Викинг имеет свой собственный нож и деревянную ложку;
  • для приготовления еды можно использовать только историчные горшки, котлы или сковороды. Вся пластмасса, банки и прочие обертки должны быть хорошо спрятаны из поля зрения (у вас есть ваши палатки для этого);
  • организаторы обеспечивают наличие дров (сухостой);
  • каждый участник должен носить историческое платье (стилизация или реплика одежды 9 — 11-го столетия), прошедшее контроль;
  • никаких часов, современных драгоценностей и солнечных очков;
  • не носить неисторичных туфель;
  • курить только в специально оборудованном месте, по всей территории исторического лагеря курение запрещено (контролируется комендантом);
  • Каждый участник мужского пола должен иметь как минимум одну единицу наступательного вооружения соответствующего периода (9- нач. 11вв.);
  • Каждый участник фестиваля, желающий принимать участие в бугуртах и штурме крепости должен помимо наступательно вооружения иметь минимум защитного вооружения: шлем и щит (для копейщиков и бродексёров достаточно только шлема);
  • Всё вооружение должно соответствовать периоду фестиваля (9- нач. 11вв.) (допускаются более ранние вендельские шлемы), требованиям организаторов фестиваля (указаны в соответствующей статье), а также быть допущено комиссией паспортистов;
  • Любые доспехи и оружие не соответствующие периоду к участию не допускаются;

  • мусор выбрасывать только в отведенных местах, в противном случае возможна дисквалификация с мероприятия;
  • пользоваться только обустроенными туалетами;
  • по окончанию мероприятия все следы пребывания должны быть убраны (контролируется Комендантом);
  • разведение костров без согласования с Комендантом запрещена;
  • запрещены современные музыкальные инструменты и исполнение песен тематика которых не соответствует формату фестиваля;
  • не желательны беседы в антураже о компьютерных играх, обсуждение космических кораблей и тому подобные темы, не характерные для раннего средневековья;
  • запрещено использование в широких масштабах ненормативной лексики;
  • запрещены любые агрессивные действия участников по отношению к друг другу и к зрителям (все конфликтные ситуации должны решаться мирным путем, если необходимо, с участием организаторов мероприятия);
